Food Spot of the Month- Bear Flag Fish Co.

As a native of Newport Beach I have had my fair share of delectable fish from family and friends sharing their bountiful catch from fishing trips. With years of eating some of the best fish that has been perfectly prepared, thus I am always expecting only the best when I go to a restaurant. And I have found a restaurant that even the most discerning of fish connoisseurs will enjoy; Bear Flag Fish Co.

Bear Flag Fish Co. is the brain child of Thomas Carson. Bear Flag Fish Co. opened its doors in 2007 with two more restaurants opening in the last ten years as well as a food truck. Over the years Thomas Carson has been able to partake in every aspect dealing with fish. From being the captain to the scrubber he was able to take in what fishing is all about. Between working on fishing boats Thomas was able to apprentice under Tim Johnson at Zenbu Sush in Cardiff, California. With his fishing and culinary knowledge Thomas now had what he needed to start a restaurant; from the years of fishing he knew how to evaluate the quality of the fish and with his restaurant experience he was able to take the best fish and make it perfection with proper preparation.

Thomas and his restaurants pride themselves on both quality and sustainability. Thomas picks only the finest fish that he can find and he actually knows what he is looking for from his years of fishing; he knows if the fish was relaxed or stressed when the fishermen caught it. It is the attention to detail like this that take his dishes to another level. He believes in purchasing as much local fish as possible to make certain that he knows the product that much better. As for sustainability, Thomas wants to make certain that there is plenty of fish for future generations and so the restaurant holds its standards to the highest possible and only buys from reputable sources that are following US regulations.

Now let’s talk about the food. Whatever you end up picking I can guarantee that you will absolutely fall in love with. To start, you have some incredible appetizers ranging from Sashimi plate to Peruvian Ceviche to a refreshing Seaweed salad. One of my personal favorites is the Ahi Poke; the Ahi is melt in your mouth good and you are able to divine into the Ahi Poke with chips from El Toro Bravo. If you want to start your meal with a non seafood item I would recommend the grilled artichoke. Bear Flag Fish Co. has three soups; New England clam chowder, Ciopinno soup and Miso soup, that will keep your stomach and body warm and happy. Now the entrees, there are only seven options for you to pick from but even with so few options it is hard to pick since you will most likely want everything. For the first timer I would recommend their fish tacos which are pure bliss. The tacos are so simple with just cabbage and pico de gallo but with the fish having a light blanket of panko crusting and the Tommy sauce you will not be able to stop eating the tacos. Tommy sauce is found on almost every item and you will definitely want to get extra; the sauce is a a spicy mayo that pairs perfectly with the fish. Another option that I would recommend is the grilled seafood sandwich. Just like with the fish taco their sandwich is simple with nothing over the top to hide the incredible fish. You can pick the fish you want grilled and the sandwich is served with lettuce, tomato, onion and some Tommy sauce and all is served on a C’est Si Bon Baguette. This is just one of the aspects of  Thomas’s restaurant that I really appreciate; he works with other local restaurants to make his establishment more of a community.  Bear Flag Fish Co. also has Daily Specials, check them out here.

If you are in the mood to maybe prepare your own incredible fish at home? If you are, then you are in luck since Bear Flag Fish Co. besides being a restaurant also has a fish market where you can pick out the same great fish that they use at their restaurant. Find out what you can purchase here.
